Adventure and explore whilst supporting development in the incredible country of Uganda

As a team, trek with your local guides around the crater lakes surrounded by extinct volcanoes, through forests with breath taking views, until you reach the jungle home of the worlds last wild silverback mountain gorillas. Spend time with the king of the jungle before relaxing on the banks of the River Nile. Then volunteer with East African Playgrounds in a local school to install a brand new playground for the children to enjoy for years to come. All this whilst making life long friends, memories and having the time of your life.

Project Costs

We pride ourselves on running the highest of quality and most ethical international volunteering projects, whilst also providing our volunteers with the best levels of support both in the UK and on the project in Uganda.

The Gorilla Trek was created and is still run by East African Playgrounds to give students a safe, supported, ethical life-changing experience. Whilst supporting the beneficiaries of East African Playgrounds, the work of a Ugandan social enterprise in developing the communities surrounding the Gorilla Home and to support the Uganda Wildlife authority in the preservation of the forest and protection of the Gorillas.

East African Playgrounds has won several awards for the sustainability and ethics of our volunteering program and most recently won the 2018 National Student Fundraising Award for Charity of the year.

The costs are kept to a minimum without compromising on quality. East African Playgrounds are able to do this as the whole progamme is hosted and managed in-house by our experienced and professional team.

Registration fee - £200

Your registration fee reserves your place on The Gorilla Trek, securing the deposit for your gorilla permit which is paid in full when the full amount of fundraising has been received. This registration fee can be refunded within the first 7 days if you change your mind, however is un-refundable beyond this.

Participation cost - £2,000

In order to confirm your place on the project you will need to raise a minimum of £2,000 which will cover the following:
  • Project costs (£600) - This covers the majority of your food, accommodation, transport and activities whilst in Uganda with East African Playgrounds as well as your support you receive in the UK and Uganda.
  • Gorilla Permit (£300) - To see the Gorilla's you must have a permit as there is limited spaces, £200 will already be put down as a deposit and so this confirms your permit and goes towards protecting the Gorillas and their wild habitat.
  • Donation to East African Playgrounds (£1,100) - Supporting East African Playgrounds to improve the lives of the people of Uganda by provide playgrounds, running educational play programmes as well as our vocational programme.
Compared to similar international projects the Gorilla trek is more affordable, longer and gives you more variety. With our support, training and resources most students raise far beyond this target. Any money raised beyond the target helps East African Playgrounds expand the work we do.
We support you with your fundraising through fundraising training, one on one fundraising plans, online fundraising platforms, how to guides for every type of fundraising event, we organise team fundraisers and large events for you to raise funds at also. Why choose the Gorilla Trek?

Finding the right international adventure and volunteering projects can be a bit of a minefield. With lots of 'Voluntourism' and 'Gap year' companies cashing in on young peoples desire to travel and experience new things whilst also making a difference. We started the Gorilla Trek to give people an alternative to these companies and have won several awards as a result. The Gorilla Trek gives you the chance to join a three week project that combines the best of adventure with the best of volunteering.

Ethical and sustainable volunteering for you and for the communities we work with is at the core of everything we do. From our high impact projects (which support thousands of people and the Gorilla themselves) to the huge amount of support we give you in both the UK and Uganda, we are able to keep costs low and transparent whilst giving you a true experience of a life time. Find out more about why hundreds of students and young people choose to join us in Uganda each year.
