Natalya Boswell I have signed up with the charity East African Playgrounds to take on the Gorilla Trek in Uganda with an aim to raise £2,000. The focus of this charity is to improve the childhood of hundreds of children in schools across rural Uganda. We believe in the power that play has in every child’s development. It not only builds physical, social, emotional and cognitive skills, but also enhances all aspects of their life. All around the world it is taken for granted that children have the right to play and enjoy their childhoods, but unfortunately for many communities across East Africa this is not the case, often children spend their time away from school looking for work or helping with chores around the house, therefore our aim is to provide a fun and safe environment in schools for the children to use and access all the benefits play has to offer for their learning, development and wellbeing. As well as building the playground, we also run a creative play programme, where we will take on activities that encourage children’s creativity and problem-solving skills.

To raise the £2,000, I will be spending three weeks in Uganda – trekking through every kind of terrain (mountains, lakes and jungles) as well a walking alongside the last of the worlds silverback gorillas which will directly aid the efforts being made towards the conservation of these gorillas as a proportion of the money being raised will go directly to the Ugandan Wildlife Authority. Furthermore, another part of the money will go to the non-profit trek company, the Home of Edirisa, who support the communities that we will trek through. Finally, I will end my time in Uganda by volunteering on a playground build in one of the schools.

Every donation will go to a non-profit organisation which is focussed on developing East Africa. Please help me raise my goal of £2,000 by giving whatever you can no matter how big or small and help give children their childhoods. Some examples of what you can fund with a donation are:

£10 – builds a toy giraffe for the children of a community to play with
£15 – builds a motorbike out of tires, allowing kids to engage their creativity in roleplay scenarios
£20 – funds safety equipment for a disadvantaged young adult, helping them to be as safe as they start their meaningful employment with East African Playgrounds
£50 – builds a table with space for board games such as checkers or snakes and ladders

I appreciate all of your support and thank you for any donations,

Natalya x
