In Summer 2018, I have the exciting opportunity to go to Uganda and help to build a playground for children with East African Playgrounds!

East African Playgrounds is an international development charity that strives to ensure every child can access their right to childhood. In many communities across East Africa, children spend time out of school looking for work or helping with chores at home. This is why the charity believes in the power of play to transform the lives of these children, a philosophy they implement by building playgrounds, training educators play-based teaching, and employing disadvantaged young adults.

My trip to Uganda is as a part of the University of Kent’s ‘Raise and Give’, who will be fundraising over £18,000! I am aiming to raise £2000 individually, and in order to do this I will be spending three weeks in Uganda. During the first week, I will be partaking in a strenuous trek around mountains, lakes and rivers, before volunteering on a playground build myself! During the afternoon, we will lead lessons with the children, to help promote creative play, and to encourage children to learn different problem-solving skills through games.

Here’s a few examples of what your donation could fund:

£10 – builds a toy giraffe for the children of a community to play with

£15 - builds a motorbike out of tires, for kids to play on

£20 - funds safety equipment for a disadvantaged young adult (e.g. safety boots, safety glasses, ear defenders, gloves and overalls), helping them to be safe as they start their meaningful employment with East African Playgrounds

£50 – builds a table with space for board games such as checkers or snakes and ladders

Of the £2000 I raise, £300 will go to the Ugandan Wildlife Authority to help conservation efforts of the gorillas I will be visiting, which are the last remaining silverback gorillas in the wild. £600 will go on project costs of food, accommodation and travel, most of which will go to the non-profit trek company, the Home of Edirisa, who support the communities we will trek through. The remaining £1,100 will go direct to East African Playgrounds to fund their incredible work. I will be paying £500 – 600 for my flights out to Uganda separately.

Please help me reach my fundraising target by giving whatever you can – any donation will mean a lot. Every child deserves a childhood.
