I am working with the charity East African Playgrounds to go to rural Uganda in June 2018 to build a playground at a primary school, my aim is to raise £2000. Play is considered one of a child's fundamental human rights by the United Nations, with much evidence for it being a key part of a child's learning, healthy brain development and wellbeing. In many rural areas in all of Africa, play is overlooked while children have to work to earn money for themselves and their families. Many schools focus on educating children by rote-learning, but often overlook mental and social wellbeing, which are proven to be extremely important for children to development vital life skills, such as problem solving, self-control and fine motor skills. For a child, play is a time for them to forget any responsibilities and help them make sense of the world, and it has been proved that play can help children massively when going through trauma or difficult situations.
