Kyle Foran Hello! I've teamed up with the charity 'East African Playgrounds' to raise £2000 by May 2018 to provide the children of Uganda the opportunity to live their childhood as a child should; through play. (East African Playgrounds builds playgrounds all over Uganda - including in refugee camps - helping to empower some of the world's most disadvantaged children). This will be undertook through EAP's Gorilla Trek programme.

Stop right there. I know what you're thinking: "I clicked on this to read more about the children.. Now there's gorillas??" And all I can say in response to that is... Yup!
That's the beauty of this project in particular. Not only will we be supporting the children of Africa, but also its wildlife. I'll talk more on that later. For now, back to the children:

The benefits of play on a child's development are remarkable. Play builds physical, emotional, cognitive & social skills; as well as freedom of thought and creativity, allowing the child room to learn and make sense of their world.
Access to play is not a luxury that a child "can" or "cannot" have based on where they live. Rather, it's something that ALL children should have. I believe that to my very core.

There's a quote from Albert Einstein that I absolutely love: "Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world."
A child's imagination, when given the room to express itself, is the most wonderful & magical thing in existence. Children are literally able to create worlds out of thin air! Imagine what could become of this one if we provide room for every child's imagination to come to fruition. What magical world could these next generations create? We can find out starting right here.

Examples of what you can fund with a donation are:

£10 - Builds a toy giraffe for the children of a community to play with.

£15 - Builds a motorbike out of tires, allowing kids to engage their creativity in roleplay scenarios.

£20 - Funds safety equipment for a disadvantaged young adult, helping them to be safe as they start their meaningful employment with East African Playgrounds.

£50 - Builds a table with room for board games such as checkers or snakes & ladders!

To raise this money, I will be spending three weeks in Uganda, taking on every kind of terrain she has to offer (mountains, lakes, jungles) before then volunteering on a brand new playground build myself - and refurbishing others. Every penny donated will go to a non-profit, focused on developing East Africa.
*Another amazing thing: My volunteering here will not take away the opportunity of paid work from the Ugandan people. In fact, I will be working along side trained Ugandan professionals.

Now back to the gorillas... Of the £2000 I raise, £300 will go to the Ugandan Wildlife Authority to aid with the conservation efforts of the gorillas, which I will be visiting whilst in the jungle. These are some of the last remaining mountain gorillas in the world. £600 will go on project costs of food, accommodation & travel, most of which will go to the non-profit trek company 'The Home of the Edirisa' (who support local communities I will trek through) and the remaining £1100 will go directly to East African Playgrounds to fund their incredible work.

Although I don't plan on wrestling any gorillas to raise money (I'm not Tarzan, okay. Well... not yet) I do implore you to donate anything you can to help the children. Together, let's provide a means for them to live their childhood like a child should - through play. Thank you. Kyle Foran
