Charlotte Hallowell Having signed up to a RAG challenge in both first and second year - why should third year be any different? I've been interested in this trip since first year and am so excited to have finally signed up to the Gorilla Trek with the charity, East African Playgrounds to raise £2,000 to help bring the gift of play to the children of Uganda.

This summer I will be going to Uganda to trek to find the last remaining Silverback Mountain Gorilla's as well as living and working within a local community to build a playgrounds for a school. We will install a safe playground made out of recycled materials. East African Playgrounds also gives the teachers play based teacher training, allowing the children to learn in a playful environment as well as giving playground maintenance training to the community to ensure sustainability. The communities work alongside East African Playgrounds to map out the plan for the playground and help to build it so it is truly their own.

A playground is a classroom in disguise, children don't know they are learning, they don't feel like they are learning, but really they are taking in the whole world whilst playing with their friends. There are numerous studies to show the importance of play in a child’s education and development.

East African Playgrounds is a charity that has already affected over 250 communities and changed the lives of 375,000 children in Uganda. By the end of 2019 this will increase to half a million children so this really is the year to get involved!

£5.11 gives one child their childhood back through access to a safe, fun and child-focussed playground.
£21.83 educates a teacher on the importance of including play in education and creates a peer network for them to share their learning in.
£73.80 equips a former street child with everything they need to learn the basics of welding, from their own set of work boots through to ear defenders and glasses.
£131 teaches a community of care-givers and educators about the importance of play at home and school, as well as how to maintain their playground.

No donation is too small - please give anything you can to help this absolutely amazing charity! Charlotte Hallowell
