The volunteers arrived in Entebbe last weekend and settled into Ugandan life at Alpha Guest House, Entebbe, they slept off their tiredness from the flight, checked out the Entebbe beaches and enjoyed a BBQ, ready to head off to the island on the Monday. The volunteers arrived at their schools at dusk to find the school choir singing to greet them, what a lovely welcome!
Tuesday morning the volunteers all woke up early to begin work to find at the school yet more singing and entertainment! At Kibaale Primary School they even had a dance competition and one of our volunteers Katie Smith got into the final! So Tuesday was spent getting to know everyone and saw the beginning of the sports program. At Kasekulo Primary School we had 8 local volunteers keen to be trained up as coaches. The children and volunteers had a wonderful time playing Netball, Volleyball and Football. For some of the children it was their first time playing Volleyball, I think it will be their new favorite! The children are really enjoying having lots of adult role models around.
The building on the playground started probably on Wednesday morning and lots of community volunteers showed up to help out, meaning that we were able to start cementing in the playground the following day … speedy work guys!
On Thursday afternoon after the first bits of cementing took place the sports program continued and we started a new arts class with 8 very talented children drawing portraits at Kasekulo Primary School. The aim at both the schools is to get the children to paint a Muriel on their school wall by the end of the project.
After a busy weeks work, making friends and many new experiences the Kasekulo volunteers headed to Masaka to enjoy good food and a swimming pool, whilst the Kibaale volunteers when to Mirembe to enjoy the beautiful beaches.
So first week of the first volunteer project of 2012 and both teams have already started on cementing the climbing frame, helped out in the sports coaching and taught some great Art classes. What will we achieve this week coming?!
