In the summer of 2008, a team of three volunteers spent 8 weeks in the town of Kibaya, in rural Tanzania. The first playground was built and became the blue print for the future projects. The playground was built on a 1000 square foot plot of scrub land next to a missionary boarding school that housed over 100 pupils. Using locally-sourced materials and local trades men we built 3 swing sets, 3 seesaws, 2 bongie-bongies, a climbing frame complete with a slide, fireman’s pole, tyre bridge and monkey bars, and a concrete net ball court. It wasn’t all building work, as the volunteers also played games with the children and explored the countryside around us. The team visited Massi markets and celebrations, Mount Kilimajaro, went on safari, and also found some time to visit the island of Zanzibar. In all, the team spent 10 weeks in Tanzania – it was the experience that inspired the formation of East African Playgrounds.

I have seen your website link, and have realised its a very special and fantastic programme you good people are doing. The nature and type of projects in relation to the mission and goals of your orgzensanization, gives me the impression that you are preparing young people become the really citizens with passions, love, compassion and concerns for others, in the third world countries. I support, congratulate and aknowldege your remarkable work. Japhet Jonas. Jane Goodall Institute, Tanzania
